Electro-Intervention

Results from documentation of an improvised performance made at Manchester’s Green Room involving laptop-cello mulching by Daniel Weaver (Unplugboy) and live video mixing. Footage was also gathered by Dave Griffiths & Nick Jordan from spycam surveillance of the cello-improviser recorded at DADI. Filming also took place at an abandoned electro-shock therapy ward, and from stop-animated interiors of a discarded maquette of the floor-plan.

Screened in 2002-03 in twin-channel format at Blackout, Bristol Community Festival (organised by Cube Cinema); aLectro_eCoustic, DADI, Manchester; and Listening Room, Bluecoat, Liverpool (organised by Frakture).  A single-screen version was at Video 825, Gallery 825, Los Angeles, and Night of the Infraterrestrials291 Gallery, London.  It was included in the media library at LUX Open: New British Artists’ Film & Video, RCA, London. The film was also reviewed by Echo Film Fest, Ljubliana.

Organised by Phil Morton (Frakture): Video-electro-acoustic live improv with Nick Jordan & Dave Griffiths (Pharmakon), Scott Byrne, Disco Operating System, Illuminati and Daniel Weaver (unplugboy). Twin-screen versions of Electro-Intervention, glitches, undercover Helsinki  spycam and other footage, plus drones, bleeps and prepared-cello-laptop mulching. Yeah.

The result of a happenstance response to Lord Mongo‘s spasmodic ballet and mad-masked prog-rock ramblings upon Parys Mountain. Ad hoc summer camping and gorilla filmmaking in the Celtic fringes of Anglesey. Other crew were Kaye Griffiths, and Mark Aldous and Paul Walker from the Fred Aldous shop – responsible for moulding The Brain and other costumery.

Achieves the enviable task of mixing the comic instinct of Vic Reeves with the low-fi sci-fi of Dr Who. This voracious scavenging of the wasteland is indicative of Mancunian artists’ paranormal ability to metamorphose the ruins. Neil Mulholland, ‘Aperto Manchester’, Flash Art, October 2003

The video started life as a music clip for Lord Mongo, by our production company Pharmakon (now defunkt). In 2002 the video was used by Martin Vincent and Dave Mackintosh for the Die Kunst Golden Jubilee Video Showcase, at Bluecoat Chambers, Liverpool; Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle; Museumnacht, Institute of Architecture, Rotterdam.  After inclusion at Castlefield Gallery‘s Purescreen I it also played at Eyeball HaemorrhageNight & Day, Manchester, organised by Kino. In 2003 it was selected by Neil Mulholland for We go round and round in the night and are consumed by fire, at Comme Ca NYC and Liverpool Biennial Independents.

Roused.. also appeared on two DVD publications – a freebie with Glasgow’s Product 08 magazine (Winter 2003), alongside other films by Colin Andrews and Matt Hulse . It was also on a limited edition FLUX catalogue designed by John Walsh, to accompany We go round and round in the night and are consumed by fire in New York.  This included films by Jane Brake & Jenna Collins, Carne & Johnson, Suki Chan, Jane Griffiths, Laurence Lane, Paul Rooney and Martin Wallace.

Lord Mongo Presents

A documentary charting absurd actions by Lord Mongo. Held in Manchester bars and pubs, his neo-Dadaist events included poetic rants, spasmodic ballet, trash constructions, puppetry – and fantasies of animal-human interaction.  The film digs into a depraved persona who battered and divided audiences – art star and circus freak.  Ending with Mongo’s epic Britzcarraldo, an Herzog-inspired cabaret tribute to creative madness.

Lord Mongo Presents was shot over 1999-2000, including live art performances such as Britzcarraldo and Mongo’s monthly quiz/happening/residency at Big Hands. Also Dark Manger at Briton’s Protection and N4 Festival at Night & Day.  Camera by Kaye Griffiths & Nick Jordan. Costumes and props by Mongo, Mark Aldous and Paul Walker. Music by Wack Jeff, Phil Addyman, Pendro and Lord Mongo.  Produced by Steve Manford.

Screenings at various Manchester events in 2001:  aLectro_eCoustic, Bar Centro (organised by Daniel Weaver); QuickFlick, Night & DayBluescreen, SHO#1, IDEA (Kwong Lee); and Vaudeville, Green Room (organised by Jex).  Other live projections done with Nick Jordan for the Lord Mongo gigs in 2002 were at Tmesis (with the spy-vid masque) and the Festival of Briton, Roadhouse (organised by Steve Manford). Another music video, Transistor Man, was made for the Mongo band around this time.
